...the difference is attitude

For Verna, it’s all about attitude. As a crimson sun sets over the Broad River, salt marsh glowing green in the day’s last light she holds her beloved dog Muttly and celebrates the end of another day in historic Beaufort, the crown jewel of South Carolina’s Lowcountry.

Verna’s not the type to rush a buyer into a house, but she’ll press to get a home sold. Her attitude is to take time and understand each buyer and his or her needs, lifestyle, reasons for moving, and so on, so that she can better find a selection of homes to show. Representing the seller, she has a long list of contacts and marketing expertise to get the job done, for the best price possible, in the best timeframe. She’s particular about Beaufort and wants to make sure that newcomers appreciate the finer elements of this historic town – while at the same time understanding that newcomers have flavored the Lowcountry like spices in a Frogmore Stew dinner of shrimp, corn and potatoes. You’ll see, with Verna ...the difference is Attitude!

So who is Muttly?

It was 1996 when Verna visited the local Humane Society and found a rather unattractive – okay, a downright ugly dog – that appeared to be a mix of Maltese and Poodle. She wasn’t sure she wanted to take him home he was so unattractive – nothing but skin and bones, not even any hair. “The vet said I might as well take the dog home over the weekend and if I didn’t want him, I could bring him back on Monday,” she recalls. “Needless to say, by Sunday night there wasn’t a question I’d keep him.

“He didn’t have a name for a few days except Mutt, Ugly or Dog. Then one evening he was sitting on my lap and I asked him if his name was Muttly. He pricked up his ears as if to say, ‘that’s my name!’ and it stuck. He is such an important part of my life today. It’s interesting how such an ugly dog has become one of the best looking dogs alive…”

More about Verna

Her day may have included a round of golf (she once hit a hole-in-one), a trip to the gym, singing in her gospel quartet and of course, helping people find the right home of their own in this coastal corner of Paradise. Her outlook at the end of the day is joy and satisifaction for making her home in Beaufort.

Verna moved to Beaufort almost 20 years ago when her husband, Neal, retired early after a career in the Department of Agriculture. With her own background as a classroom teacher in Kansas and Iowa, as a small-business owner and as executive director of the American Cancer Society in Morgantown, West Virginia, Verna wanted a place to settle down, a place to call home.

Their prerequisites for relocation? To be on the coast, near the water, in a place with a mild climate. They preferred a small, friendly town, but with access to larger cities. With her husband’s medical discharge from the military, they wanted to be somewhere where their military benefits were recognized. Their searching ended when they found Beaufort.

“Success at the expense of faith and family really is failure…”

Verna grew up on a farm northeast of Des Moines, Iowa, where they raised cows, hogs and corn. Her nearest neighbor was about a mile away, across the fields – so she learned to finish her chores early to allow her time to play. She graduated from Drake University with a degree in education and went on to a 13-year career in teaching. Her daughter Lynn has followed the teaching path and now is departmental head of special education for schools in Homerville, Georgia. Her two older brothers and a sister live in Iowa and Minnesota, maintaining her upper Midwest connections.

Making the Most of Everything

Beaufort makes me feel whole,” Verna explains. “When my husband Neal died a few years ago, the world changed for me. Now I have to be totally independent – run a house inside and out, take care of Muttly, handle the finances, and the biggest thing, keep on living a productive life. When I come home, I find peace and contentment in watching the sunsets over the water.”

Today Verna devotes her hobby time to music. She has played the piano since age 10 as well as the tenor sax and clarinet in her high school band. She now is the lone female voice in a gospel quartet that performs in small churches across the South. Verna loves to entertain friends in her home. When she can get away, she likes to visit friends and family across the country, with special winter holiday trips to New York City to enjoy all the Big Apple's festivities.

Why Sell Homes?

Verna is one of those social animals who thrives on building relationships. To her, selling a home isn’t a business transaction; it’s the start of a relationship. Learning her clients’ needs, desires and dreams helps her find a variety of homes that might fit the bill – and every home tour refines that vision further until the client inevitably discovers what Verna’s known all along – Beaufort is right for them too, in just the right home.

Her husband passed away in 2001 after 28 years of marriage. The adjustment has been difficult, but made easier by her community involvement and close friends. Today she thrives by recognizing that “life isn’t a dress rehearsal, but the real performance. We have to make the most of every day, and I do that from the time I wake up. The first thought that comes to mind is, ‘This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.’ Then I take care of Muttly, drink my coffee, hold him in my lap as I read the newspaper and prepare for the day. I’m trying to visit my fitness center as often as possible because exercise is so important to how successful I am in my work and in my daily life.”
